OT: Know Your Roots (Getting to the Origins of Songs)

I like to dabble in sound and video editing. Talking w/ my father-in-law a couple weekends ago, we started discussing music origins and all the songs out there that have roots in older music... he had made a mix of some songs that were based off one and another. So I took a couple days and put together a 2 disc CD with mashups of songs and their derivatives... and "Know Your Roots" was born. Here are some samples of some of the songs I paired up. All songs are chronological, any predecessor comes first in the song mix and in the title of the song itself.

FOOTBALL: Jewel Hampton and Jordan Bernstine Arrested

Word is there was a fight at Vito's, Jewel was involved, cops were called by the staff, Jewel was arrested, Jordan interfered in the arrest and was cited for pub. intox.

Bernstine, aka Jordan Morris, "hampered" the Hampton arrest, according to Campbell. Blew a .129 post arrest. Hampton's BAC was .091. about 1 hour ago via UberTwitter
Hampton was involved in several physical problems inside the bar, the IC Police report states. about 1 hour ago via UberTwitter
Bernstine "wasn't constructive" during Hampton's arrest and that's what led to his arrest, according IC police Lt. Bill Campell.

The following is a statement from Iowa Football Coach Kirk Ferentz:
“I am aware of the incident involving Jordan Bernstine and Jewel Hampton Friday evening and at this time I am in the process of gathering all the facts concerning the incident. Until I have all the facts, I’ll have no further comment and the incident will be handled internally.”

Personally, I don't see much missed time for these guys. Jordan is of-age, it's the start of summer on a Friday night, nothing wrong with going out and having a couple brews... however, he was in a tight battle for the starting CB spot, so he might take a backseat for awhile, though. Jewel looks to maybe have a tougher road back, under-age and out at the bars after 10 PM (new I.C. rule on June 1st), along with the fighting. He could find himself at 3rd string come this fall. Iowa is pretty stacked at running back, so a couple games without Jewel won't hurt the Hawkeyes that much either.

By "handing it internally", I see that as the punishment likely won't be too severe.

At least it's a self-reporting from Mel that he is a Hawkeye.

This afternoon, Basabe hit up his Twitter with this message:
"It's Official... Im an Iowa Hawkeye now"

Of course nothing is official until there is confirmation of a signed NLI, but if it holds up, it's a great snag for Iowa. The commit softens the blow of losing former signee Cody Larson who left Iowa for Florida, as well as the loss of Aaron Fuller who transferred to USC.

This is would be the first official recruit for Fran McCaffery as the new head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes Mens Basketball team. He will join Roy Marble Jr and Zach McCabe in the 2010 recruiting class.

Jeff Goodman from FoxSports.com has reported that Aaron Fuller will transfer to USC to play basketball for Kevin O'Neill. USC was already low on scholarships because of their self-imposed sanctions.

MEN'S BB: Ben Brust is the Player of the Year in Lake County

Congratulations go out to Iowa Hawkeye recruit, Ben Brust, in being selected as the honorary caption for Lake County. Some good quotes in the article from Ben.

He chose Iowa in July and has been proudly donning Iowa apparel almost every day since.
"It's pretty much all I ever wear," Brust laughed.

Brust says it doesn't concern him in the least that the Hawkeyes have had a rough season (10-19) and currently sit in ninth place (4-12) in the Big Ten standings.

"I've seen strides all year," Brust said of Iowa. "They've been improving all year. They have one senior and one junior playing. The rest are freshmen and sophomores. As we keep developing, I don't see why we can't win Big Ten titles and compete with the top teams."

Brust is more than ready for that challenge. And sooner rather than later.

"A big reason I chose to come to Iowa is because I feel like I have a good opportunity to step in right away and help the team. I'll bring a lot of energy and I'll be a threat to score and they need that," Brust said. "Hopefully, I'll get that chance next year. I'm getting real anxious for it."

Ben Brust Mundelein

The Iowa-bound Brust has been nothing short of spectacular all season. Often facing double teams, he was still nearly impossible to stop, averaging an area-best 24.6 points per game. He poured in a career-high 50 points twice this season, scored more than 40 points four times and more than 30 points five times. A versatile player who can score from just about anywhere, his specialty still remains the three-pointer. He hit 83 of those. "He just loves basketball. He's a gym rat," Knar said of Brust, the honorary captain of the Daily Herald's Lake County all-area team. "But for as good as he is and for as much as he's done, he's an amazingly regular guy. He is by far one of the most down-to-earth kids you'll ever meet and I think one of the things that impresses me most about him is that he's handled everything that has come his way with such grace."

Also, here's video from this past weekend. Ben took time during halftime of the Iowa-Indiana game to chat a little bit. (No making fun of my awful camera skills or penchant for saying, "Right on". Thanks) I have been thoroughly impressed with Ben during the very limited interactions I have had with him. Very humble guy, who is ready to go out and help Iowa get back to winning ballgames.
