FOOTBALL: MSU's Jeremy Ware's Helmet to Helmet Hit on Iowa's Colin Sandeman

It was the right call by the officials, no matter how long it took for the flag to come in.
I don't know how any self respecting football fan can not see that this was a blantant H2H.

It's pretty obvious, folks.

Ware should be given a 1 game suspension from the Big Ten, while the Big Ten Network should suspend Wayne Larrivee for his lack of knowledge and the way he approached the hit. If Coleman from Ohio State was given a suspension, so should Ware.

These players are protected by rules that have been in place for many years. It
is of the utmost importance that participants, coaches and game officials carefully
and diligently observe safety rules.
Intentional helmet-to-helmet contact is never legal, nor is any other blow directed toward an opponent’s head. Flagrant offenders shall be disqualified.

  6. As a nuetral party at the game last night. I have to say that the spartan fans lacked a lot of class. YOU DO NOT BOO AS A PLAYER IS GETTING UP. If you want to boo will he is laying there motionless that is your call. Howeve there is no excuse for booing when he stands up. If the spartans do not commit so many penalties they would not have to blame the refs. Blame your coach Iowa ran 3 slants on all 3 of the last plays. He couldnt see that coming?????

  7. I was at the game... the play happened right in front of me. When it happened, my first thought was, "I can't believe the refs didn't call a foul on that. It was clearly an illegal hit. I was disgusted with the MSU fans in response to the flag. In fact, after witnessing the response, and having been an MSU fan for 30 years, I no longer have any desire to be known as an MSU fan whatsoever. I'll join with some other team that has some class.

  9. why does your boys arm fly in the air when he gets hit if it was helmet to helmet? why does his head not go jerking back? i've been hit helmet to helmet before. that was clean. take pride hiding behind the refs. and MSU fan, former MSU fan, football does penalties not fouls, so I can tell you were a diehard fan of the game....yeah. Let's be real with ourselves for a minute. and other person up there. I was at the game as well, the wave wasn't started during the injury because Iowa fans were trying to get in too. dumb ass.

  10. Looks like a clean hit to me. A hard hit but a clean one the main contact is the push with his arms. Any helmet contact was coincidental and not worthy of a penalty. It was a good hard fought battle and it is too bad the refs had to ruin that. We will never know who would have really one the battle. But that next 3rd and 8 play would have been hype!

  12. Clean hit my fucking ass. The guy comes in leading with his helmet and intentionally helmets Sandeman. Sandeman stopped and Ware came in helmet first. If you saw the camera view from behind ware you actually see Ware's head rock back when he hits Sandeman.

    This idiot should have been suspended for a game. It was blatant, and about as unsportsmanlike as it gets. Yes this is football and people get hit but rules against helmet to helmet hits are there to protect the players from concussions and other types of serious injuries. If Ware had any one bit of intelligence he would have come in with his shoulder not his helmet.

    To Anonymous (sorry, that's all I can address you as) - the ground definitely could have caused the KO, but the way Sandeman's head snapped back, he went pretty limp on the hit. It could have been caused be either one of them. If the hit didn't do it, I'd think Sandeman would have been able to put this hands/arms down to prevent his head from slamming into the ground. I realize I am biased, being a Hawkeye fan... but the picture above shows Ware's helmet hitting Sandeman's helmet. That, by textbook, is a helmet to helmet. I'm not sure how much more anyone else has to see.

All I'm saying is having suffered four concussions during football games all of which I will admit were clean hits, it is not easy to use your arms as protection against this type of thing, especially when are first using it to brace for the impact. I've been hit like this before. the picture to me, looks like he got half of his shoulder, half helmet. The hit however looks clean to me and i do feel the flag was just thrown due to the fact that the player was hurt. not so much arguing about it cause its in the past and the refs wouldnt swallow their pride anyways but I truely feel it was the ground forcing the limp body.   17. Video of an NFL is great, however my question remains - can you not see the freeze frame? Is your browser not rendering it correctly? From that frame you can see the MSU helmet hitting the Iowa helmet. That is a HELMET to HELMET. That's where the story ends. That is, unless you want to argue that when a player's helmet hits another players helmet first that it's not a helmet to helmet... at that point we'd have to stop discussion for obvious reasons. That would be like arguing the color black isn't black.

  18. All I can say is WOW. Every penalty called in this game was reviewed over and over by the commentators. And every time, you could clearly see if was a penalty. The DJK hold...definite...you can't grab a handful of jersey with a zebra looking straight at you. The helmet to helmet...sorry to say, it was an illegal hit.

    Its sad when your own school newspaper, The State News (http://www.statenews.com/) blatantly states that MSU fans were being classless during this game.

The helmet to helmet rule is in place to keep the game safe and until players like Ware face tougher penalties, these hits will continue. Even one game suspensions do not seem to deter these violent punks that should not be in college in the first place.
    Thanks to the extreme violence that has crept into the game, no self respecting parent can encourage their sons to play football anymore.

  23. It shows NOTHING? My God, are you that ignorant or you just can tell the difference between a helmet and "nothing"? Yes, football is a contact sport, but there are rules you have to follow. Iowa hits hard too. We all love watching big hits, but when you go above the shoulder pads, you are going to get flagged... and Ware did.

    I have also heard that penalty was for taunting - that would explain the late flag. I'm not sure about that, but it was going to be a 15 yarder any way you look at it.

I'm suprised not a single person on any of the posts that I've seen thus far have made mention of the fact that Ware could have tackled Sandeman in any other way but chose to tackle him high like he did. BTW have any of you taken a look at the 09-10 NCAAF rulebook? I have and it makes no mention of the tacklers head being lowered. The lowering of the head is in fact a risk to the tackler more than the man receiving the tackle. Take a look at articles done about health and risk in NCAA football. I don't think Ware meant to engage helmet-to-helmet, but I do believe he engaged in a tackle meant to harm the practically defenseless Sandeman (Sandeman had turned his head and taken only one step so there is no way he could have done anything to help himself) and if you look in the rulebook itself, that exact scenario is outlined and is declared a foul. Check it out.

  29. Head hunting is head hunting. Officials officiate; players play; spectators spectate. Ware made a poor attempt to tackle and went for the high hit. As a retired coach, I am tired of hearing constant criticism of officials. As in basketball, you don't have to create a foul, you only have to create an appearance of fouling in the official's mind. Why don't we let players play, and allow the officials to officiate and make the judgement calls required by the rules. Games without officials or rules would be ludicrous. A rule isn't a rule if it isn't enforced.

  30. A corner like Ware salivates for an opportunity to hit someone like that. He was not trying to go helmet to helmet and hurt him, but he was trying to lay him out. That's something a defender dreams about doing. To call him a thug is ignorant in my opinion, and it seemed to me that he tried to hit him right in the shoulder pads. If the call would have been made at the appropriate time, this wouldn't be as much of an issue. If Ware gets suspended for that hit, that's just verification that football isn't what it used to be.

    By the way, I am not blaming this call on the game. Sure, it changed the game, but our inability to stop anyone's 2-minute offense is what lost us this game.

The question is, given the timing of what happened between the receiver catching the ball and the defender making contact, how could Ware have modified the tackle to make it happen any differently, so as to avoid the penalty? Conclusion, a non-call would have been apropos.

Nearly got a stomach ulcer worrying if we were going to lose that game due to bad officiating (and we nearly did--watch it and you can see blatant holding, pass interference, and facemasking repeatedly by MSU).   38. To see Dantonio stand there and argue with the refs about the call while a player is on the ground in spasms surrounded by medical personnel is beyond pathetic. If that would have been Dantonio's kid on the ground, do you think he would have been screaming at the ref or on his knee next to his kid making sure his brain still functioned? Let's guess. What a disgrace - it's no wonder MSU always blows a lead. Their head coach loses his cool no matter what the circumstance and could care less about the well-being of the player.     I will admit that it was a very hard hit and on the verge of a foul. Fact of the matter is, Jeremy lead with his shoulder and it was unfortunate that Sandeman was ducking and he hit his helmet. The thing that made me mad was that there was no explanation for the play. I'm ok with the personal foul penalty, but seemed like the ref went over, saw him lying motion less and then threw the flag. And if its a taunting call, I have seen way worse celebrations after a sack, touchdown, etc. Also, I found it hard to believe that the replay official didn't see the fumble on Iowa's field goal drive. The Big Ten refs review almost everything it seems and didn't review that. But nonetheless, at the end of the day Iowa won the game can't argue with that.

  44. Spartan Studen - Yes, the flag should have been thrown earlier, but the refs talked about it and made the call. The fumble on Iowa's FG drive is a non-issue, Wegher recovered his own fumble - completely moot point.

    Also even if MSU doesn't get the flag, it was still 3rd and 6 or 7, who's to say I doesn't convert the 3rd down and continue on the drive?

  46. If Ware attempts to tackle Sandeman about 6 inches lower, he can still deliver a punishing hit and no penalty will be called. Don't they teach people to tackle low anymore?

    Clearly both teams are biased towards their own agenda. At the end of the day though the rule is in place to prevent players from getting knocked unconscious via contact between two players helmets.

    Anywho it wasn't a clean hit. I keep hearing arguments about Ware hitting him with his arms first and all of that garbage. Fact of the matter is that his helmet made contact with Sandemans. Arms to the chest area do not knock people out stone cold. Ware should of had the presence of mind to use his shoulder or to just simply hit him in the legs.

    Instead however, he decided he was going to go for the home run hit. Which is fine if you don't lead with your helmet. It was a stupid play and MSU paid for it. I thought it was rather classless by the MSU coaching staff and the crowd alike to be booing the obvious helmet to helmet call as if Ware did nothing wrong.

  50. I understand that based on the rule (and a bad rule), it was a personal foul. However, I can't see how you could call for it being intentional and warrant a suspension.

    The fans were booing the refs, not the injured player. I was one of them. My section and most of the stadium cheered him as he walked off under his own power (thankfully). Saying that fans were cheering the injured player simply isn't true, but choose what you want to believe.

    I'm sorry that you think MSU and its fan base is classless. I think you are in the minority on that, but I hope we do better to change our image. I do find it humous that of the many Iowa fans I know, they are all quick to tear down other programs such as Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, OSU, and Michigan State for classless fans. Makes them appear a little bit preachy and self-conscious.

  51. Ware could have just wrapped Sandeman up with a low tackle but these guys are trained to hit hard and hopefully cause a fumble. My high school age player is taught this. I don't know any coach that is going to tell their player not to hit too hard. The initial impact was not helmet to helmet. The screen shot you are showing here clearly shows Sandeman's helmet much higher than Ware's. I think his chin might have been hit by the top of Ware's helmet.

    huge (respectful) spartan fan speaking here. i honestly and with no bias dont think this was a blatant helmet to helmet penalty. i do not believe jeremy ware was closing in on sandeman with malicious intent, rather, intent to hit him hard. at first glance the hit looks perfectly clean and perfectly legal. when you run the slow-mo replay however it is a clear helmet to helmet hit. i believe the officials (technically) made the right call, but as a huge state fan i am extremely displeased with the latancy and delay on the play call. i beleive, as an honest college football fan, that the refs should definitely be more consistent with their officiating and making decisive decisions on personal penalties such as this one. come on fellow spartan fans, sparty lost that game by going to overcautious prevent defense and giving mcnutt the easiest slant pass to the endzone for the win. i could have thrown that pass.   55. the blow was directed toward sandeman's head. this was a poor tackle. ware might have gotten his lick in, but he could use a lesson about what a true hit is before he goes anywhere. here is an instructional video that he can watch on bob sanders. sanders does a number of things that ware did not including: (1) wrapping up, (2) hitting at an appropriate level, (3) tucking the head to one side (next time ware may hurt himself if he doesn't), (4) helping his opponent off the ground, (5) maintaining his composure, (6) driving through and maintaining contact as opposed to going for the initial impulse.

    i know MSU fans might feel good about seeing this intensity, but it just does not look good seeing people walk over an obviously injured player in what appeared to be poor sportsmanship.

It was a late flag and the fact that you have to show a slow motion replay to try and prove helmet to helmet shows that it wasn't a clear cut helmet to helmet play. If you can barely illustrate it on a close up what do think it looks like from the stands. To say it was meant for his head...Sandeman clearly lowers his head as he turns up field. If you Iowa fans want to be classy you can admit you got away with a blown fumble call and stop talking like you guys are so great.

    You Iowa fans all talk about your team like they are elite. I always root for the big ten but the big ten is weak and you are squeeking out game after game. If you were to play Florida or Alabama you will get blown out. I didn't want Iowa to make it to the NC because the big ten would be embarassed but maybe I rather you guys do so I don't have to hear all the what ifs. You don't have the offense to compete with the real elite teams.   60. that was one of the hardest hitting games i've personally watched in college football this season. it was an awesome game. msu could be 8-0 as they have they have lost all four games by a combined total of 15. iowa was 8-4 last year, losing by a combined total of 12. similarities, possibly...i believe coach dantonio is doing some special things with this program.

    ...and i didn't know there were any msu fans that actually are willing to go as low as rooting for ohio state. obviously, hawkeyes don't get blue chip recruits like some of the SEC schools or USC, but this program maximizes its talent.

    and the big ten is not that weak. i'd like to see cincinnati, boise state, or TCU run the big ten. it's bullsh#t to discredit any team that goes undefeated in the big ten (unless it's ohio state)

    lastly, it's debatable as to whether or not this is a legal hit. i do believe the fans were merely reacting the the referee delay (as the penalty should have called right away or never).

  61. Just wanted to let you know about a few videos former Hawkeye Chad Greenway helped us put together for Growth Energy, an ethanol advocacy group. There's even a subtle nod to the Hawkeyes that you might like in one of the videos. Chad is helping us spread the word about ethanol.

  64. i watched the hit an i by far am not a fan of either garbage team ut the fact is the hit by ware was hard and high and because it was such a controversal hit bein either h2h or just a clean hit that guy ware should have hit him lower an saved his team sum heatache now if he wanted to cause a fumble he could have tryed a lil somethen called a strip were u actually touch the reciever wit a lil more then ur shoulder pads an helmet smh an if u ask me both msu an iowa fans sound like piss poor classy people to me msu lost iowa won the guy ware shouldve takled him differently the refs were stupid and the guy got hurt oh fuckin well
